Here is a snapshot of what we’ll be discussing today. “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” – Ephesians 4:1-3 (ESV)

What does it really mean to serve others in a Christ-like fashion? That is the heart of our discussion today. Here is a snapshot of what we’ll be discussing today. “Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. – Ephesians 6:5-6 (ESV)

What does it really mean to wear spiritual armour? That is the heart of our discussion today. Here is a snapshot of what we’ll be discussing today. “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” – Ephesians 6:10-11 (ESV)

Today, as a community we want to seize the moment to celebrate all men, including some very special men amongst us. It has been said that Dads provide their children’s needs for a short while but protect their hearts forever.

This is true, not only of Dads, but of men in general. Men are the backbone of a family and today we want to speak life, hope, and courage into that reality.

What do we do with those critical people in your life? While at its core criticism is often rooted in people “being wise in their own eyes,” it is essential that we understand whether the criticism is healthy or unhealthy before it should be dismissed or embraced.

Are you a critical person? Are you surrounded by one of ‘those’ people? If so, today is for you… or one of those people you share this with today.

This morning our special guest speaker are Bob and Audrey Meisner. Bob and Audrey Meisner are currently hosting the television program, It’s A New Day, which can be streamed 24/7 on the Internet at newday.org. It’s A New Day is also seen weekdays on broadcast channels across Canada. Released in February 2005, Marriage Under Cover, Bob and Audrey’s book about hope after betrayal, adultery and an unexpected pregnancy is undergoing its third printing and thousands are getting new perspective and help for their marriages.

What do we do with those hypocritical Hals or Henriettes in our lives? Jesus echoed the words of Isaiah when he summed up the behaviour of a hypocrite by saying, “You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you: ‘These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.’” How do we close the gap with the hypocrisy in our lives? How do we confront it when we see it in other?

Today, as a community we want to seize this moment to celebrate all women, including some very special moms amongst us. It has been said that mothers hold their children’s hand for a short while but carry their hearts forever. This is true, not only of moms, but of women in general. You are the heart of a family, and today we want to speak life, hope, and love into that reality.

He is Risen, He Is Risen Indeed.

Throughout the course of history there have been many brave men and women who have given their lives for causes that they believe in. Being falsely accused, even put to death unjustly isn’t a unique claim to Christ. What separates Jesus from all the others is that His seeming end, was really a new beginning.

He alone is God. He alone is risen indeed. He alone died, rose again and is making all things new. Your account, because of Christ, is paid in full. His death means no spiritual death for us. His resurrection means our resurrection.

Today we celebrate the resurrection reality for each of us!!!

Faith is trusting that, in Christ, we can appropriate all that Jesus has promised us. The Scriptures teach that without faith, it is impossible to please God. Peter, on one occasion saw Jesus walking on water. While the rest were dumbfounded at what they were witnessing, Peter took a literal step of faith. He stumbles, but doesn’t fall.

Faith in Christ is not just about the results but our trust in the process. Where do you need to take a fresh step of faith in your life?

Faith is trusting that, in Christ, we can do all that Jesus has promised us. Fire ignites our passion for a lost and broken world. Vision is seeing the world, through God’s eyes, which is always a stretching experience.

For Peter, God took what he had always known and enlarged his vision. This impartation wasn’t just for Peter but it was tied to a grander purpose.

When vision is birthed in our hearts, it gives us purpose but is always for something larger than ourselves. Can you see what God sees for your life?

Faith is trusting that, in Christ, we can do all that Jesus has promised us. The fire of Pentecost is central to igniting our hearts to the reality of a lost and broken world. Not only is the Holy Spirit around us, but He fill us for a purpose.

For Peter, and those in the upper room at Pentecost, being filled with the Spirit was the empowerment promised that they could minister as Jesus did. Pentecost allowed eternity to be stamped in our eyes to view the world as Jesus did.

Where does your passion need to be ignited or fanned further for your family and friends to come to Christ?

Faith is trusting that, in Christ, we can do all that Jesus has promised us. Fire ignites our passion for a lost and broken world. Vision is seeing the world through God’s eyes. Healing is the the touch that transforms.

Acts 3 is the full embodiment of faith, fire and vision. Each were essential elements that were necessary in Peter’s life for him to trust the transforming touch of Jesus as he extended his hand towards a man without sight. This moment gave way to a larger miracle. People gathered to hear the Gospel.

Healing isn’t an end but an open door to share the wonder of Jesus. Do you have faith that God is still a Healer today?

When it comes to deciding to Follow Jesus, we can discuss faith, fire, healing, and vision, and comparisons. Yet, if we fail to discuss dying to ourselves, we will do you a disservice. Following Jesus fully means dying to ourselves. Jesus said it is us taking up our cross, and following Him. Peter’s life was transformed before He lost his life in Christ. He was a dead man far before any man or woman could bear him pain. What in your life needs to die? A sin habit? An old way of thinking? A past hurt? To live is Christ, to die is gain. That is the heart of the Gospel.

When we think of Jesus we often think of grace, compassion, love, and understanding. He is all those things, but in perfection, they do not make Him soft, but strong. No where is this better illustrated than in a conversation He had with Peter on the beach. Jesus uses the strongest language possible to warm Peter of a trap that only binds – the comparison trap. There is one word, in your following Jesus, that has no place. That word is fair. God isn’t always fair, but He is always good. In your life are you guilty of looking at others lives, only to then become deflated at the state of your own?

The series will help us discover how to win a woman and how to keep a man; how to guard your heart and how to grow in all. Whether in a romantic, family, or work related situation, as you allow Christ to become bigger on the inside… you will grow.

This is a series where you become the “better half”… in your relationships.

We are “equal yet different“. These three simple words that have caused so much confusion, especially within the church. Then if you really want fireworks, insert words like submission, authority, covering or serving and you will find it is like pouring gas on an already existing fire.

Today Pastors Jason and Lori discuss in life and marriage, how being equal… yet different is not only God’s design, but how relationships best flourish.

God is covenant keeping. When is the last time you stopped to think or express thanks for just how tight the grip of God’s grace is on your life? Did you know that, because of who God is there is never a moment in your relationship with Him when the love you are getting is the love you deserve (@paultripp). How incredible is that… and how incredible is our covenant-keeping God?

Because God is a covenant-keeping God, He is the God of second chances. This reality should ignite genuine hope for you to know that no matter the current condition of your heart, second chances are always available in Him.

Today you will hear how God enabled others to experience second chances. May your heart be not just inspired but encouraged that the God of redemption dwells richly within you.

Guilt comes in various kinds and forms. Whether it be religious, parental, child, marital, family or internal, guilt is the noun that just keeps on giving. At its core, guilt is summed up by three little words: “I owe you“. Something is deserved, owed, demanded or required. A guilty heart often flows from the place of payback not pleasure.

Guilt, while simply a feeling, can drive your life of course in both subtle and profound ways. In Christ… we are guilty… yet forgiven. What can change in the light of this powerful truth?

Do you know that anger can be sinful or righteous… justified or a life-controlling problem. Anger, just like guilt, can be summed up by one three word saying, “you owe me“. The root of anger is found in the soil of us not getting what it is we want or feel we deserve. This can be in our relationships or in a general sense out of life.

Here is the good news. The deeper we allow grace to penetrate our hearts, the easier it is to let go of our anger. In Christ, we don’t get what was owed, instead of God’s wrath… in Christ we experience His love.

One of the most famous movie lines delivered in 1987 came from Michael Douglas as he played the part of a millionaire stock broker named Gordon Gekko: “Greed is good.” Fast forward twenty-five years as banks, mortgages, and dreams have collapsed and the reality hitting our world is it turns out that greed is the opposite of good.

At its core greed says “I owe me.” I’ve earned, deserved, and am entitled to more. If the heart of capitalism is greed,… then the heart of the Gospel… is give.

As we conclude our Mr. & Mrs. Betterhalf series today we do so by looking at jealousy as the final enemy of our heart. When we stop and think of jealousy what comes to mind is often what others have that we lack. As followers of Christ a jealous heart can actually take us so far that not only do we covet the lives and possessions of others, but feel that “God owes me” those same things too.

In following Jesus there are many things that aren’t fair. This is tied to your purpose and good news, well, good if jealousy doesn’t take root in your heart.

Admittedly, the story in Mark 9:14-29 is profound. While the experiences may drastically differ in your life, you may be shocked to see how much we can learn from this father and son’s experience with Jesus. While you are listening to the talk today, ask yourself a few questions. Have you ever been frustrated because despite your best efforts, you were unsuccessful to change in an area of your life? Have you ever held belief and unbelief as a result?

Last week we spoke about prayer and fasting. Today we want to discuss the two ways in which we can approach discovering our spiritual gifts. First, you have to have a desire to know and discover your spiritual gifts. There are answers and assessments you can take to answer that question.

Today, we are going to ask an even better question, that leads to clearer discovery and personal fulfillment in Christ, which is… “How so I serve the community I am apart of?”

Financial questions in regards to Biblical stewardship are one of the most common wrestles and questions that I get as a Pastor. Believe me when I say, that I have heard it all when it comes to financial stewardship and the church. The central struggle or questions of should I tithe as a New Testament follower of Christ is easily answered, but not always readily embraced.

Today, that is what we are going to unpack, and as we do, it may surface or bring into focus who you are serving when it comes to your finances.

When one thinks of courage immediately a type of person comes to mind such as a daring firefighter, or a young man or woman serving boldly on a foreign field.

Yet each of us, if we are to fulfill the purpose that God has for our lives, needs to live a courageous life.

Together we are going to look at the life of Gideon, a man who saw himself quite differently than how God saw him. Embracing God’s view for his life changed everything for him, and it can for us too.

It’s the New Year. A chance to start over. But the question is what is your top priority? For many of us it is relationships, health, friends, family and finances.

We’ve got a few ideas what it should be! Join us today, and find out why it shouldn’t be Jesus!

Christmas is tied to the giving of gifts. The tradition started on the very first Christmas with three wise men and a new born baby. This Christmas season we, in classic Canadian fashion, Journey to the Heart of the season through music, art, and spoken word each week.

As you come, there are two questions we wish for you to take into your heart:

What is the one gift that only you can give to Christ?

What is the one gift that only Christ can give to you?

Are you the type of person who lives life in the fast lane running from one project to the next? Are you most fulfilled when your feet are on fire as you blaze through each week? If you are, then this week is for you. The Journey of Your Heart is embracing the gift of… time. We know you are busy but make time this week to give Jesus the one gift that only you can give, and you may discover a gift, this Christmas season, that only He can give to your productive life.

You are the problem solver. The one to whom complex isn’t overwhelming but a puzzle to be solved. You are most fulfilled when your mind is processing the potential of what is and what could be? If this is you, the Journey of Your Heart is embracing the gift of… thought. You may have many objections or arguments against the message of the Christmas story, but the journey we invite you on starts with opening your mind to the possibility of “what if?”

You are the one who feels deeply. The one to whom your heart guides your decisions. You are most fulfilled when you are inspired, which comes when your heart is engaged. You feel deeply. If this is you, the Journey of Your Heart is embracing the gift of… feeling. As you attend this week, open your heart to the sights, sounds, and the Saviour by giving Jesus the gift of your… heart.

Mixture. When it comes to recipes, martial arts or generations the blending concept or ingredients are fantastic. Yet, when it comes to the Gospel, mixture is the quickest way to render the Gospel ineffective. While there is no single issue causing the steep drop off in faith, understanding mixture will go a long way to wrapping our hearts around a very real problem facing the global church today.

Last week we took time to diagnose the problem of how we seem to be losing quality in regards to the Gospel. This week we want to continue by exploring some of the things we as a church, and you as followers of Christ can do to solve this very real challenge facing the church today.

The first week we discussed problems. The second week we came up with potential solutions. Today, we want to talk about strategy and what we as a community of Christ followers are doing to see the generational exodus from faith and the church reversed.

We won’t be discussing abstract ideas, but embracing what we are doing from those who carry the burden of the next generation in their hearts.

The story of Samson is all too familiar. Someone full of gifting and potential blinded by hurts, habits, and hang-ups of a fractured heart. While at the centre of the story is God’s redemption, one can’t help but wonder what “could have been” if Samson could have experienced recovery before it was too late.

God will redeem! This is core of the Gospel. The question staring at each of our lives is discovering where do we need to open our heart to recovery, before it is too late?

In the centre of the story of Ruth lies a moment of ultimate vulnerability followed by words that stir the soul, “I will redeem you.”

In life there is no such thing as a self-made man or woman. Each of us have someone to whom we can express thanks. To those of us who are followers of Christ, the ultimate expression of gratitude isn’t for the good things in our lives but the grace that was freely given to us. Are you grateful for His amazing grace?

There was a time when it was Joshua and Caleb. They were… equals and inseparable. Yet when Moses chose Joshua as his successor, things changed for Caleb. He now had to embrace the truth that in order to fulfill God’s purpose in your life, you don’t always need to be number one.

The true story of life isn’t found in the position you hold, but in the posture of your heart. Is your striving to be number one blinding you to the beauty of what is right in front of you today?

Moses, the great deliver of Israel, started the same way all our lives do. Although, no one can deny that his had some dramatic life-changing moments that we cannot relate to (unless you were placed in a basket, drifted down a river, and found by the daughter of the most powerful man in Egypt).

The truth is that all of us need both parents and the kindness of strangers as we grow and develop. Do you trust that God knows how to bring the right people into your life at the exact right time?

The story of Jonah is rich and deep with many angles to consider and principles to glean from. Yet if we turn our gaze not only into Jonah’s life, but to God, we quickly discover the beauty that though we are created in the image of God,… it is a blessed thing that God isn’t anything like us.

In the story of Jonah we will discover that when we want revenge, God may have a different plan in mind. A plan that reveals the reality of hearts and shows us once again, that He is God… and we are not.

You don’t need to look far to come to the conclusion that our culture swims in the waters of dishonour. It is everywhere. Whether it be in the home, our political arena or and even in the church.

Perhaps it’s time that we understand the difference between honour and respect. Failure to embrace a lifestyle of honour, while expressing the ebbs and flows of respect can keep us immature in our relationships.

1 Peter 2:17 says “Honour everyone.” The only way to do this is with a clear understanding of the difference between honour and respect.

Last week we took time to understand the difference between honour and respect (available at lifecentre.org). This week we are going to build on that foundation by discussing how we honour the authority God has placed over our lives. While the principles are across the board, we are going to tilt the talk towards understanding healthy, spiritual authority.

Is passing on crippling debt to the next generation honour? Is it honouring to say to someone, simply based on age that you are no longer needed? The Scriptures, both Old and New Testament, has much to say about generational honour.

This series has been primarily discussing honour in the context of differences (available at lifecentre.org). The truth of the matter is there isn’t anything difficult with honour, as long as it is serving you. The moment it becomes challenging is when there are differences. The greater the differences, the more appealing the path of dishonour becomes. How do we respect differences but still walk together in honour? Taking differences one step further is a quote that I love: “The only difference between the rich and poor is money and I have found that is a solvable problem.”

I am excited to share with you how Lifecentre is taking another step to bridge the gap between the have and the “have nots”.

What is something that isn’t measured in high, medium, or low values? You either have it or you don’t. You choose it or you don’t. Something that no matter whether your life currently is riding the crest of success or reaching up from the wreckage, is always one decision away.

What is something that is often spoken in terms of ownership rather than opportunity?

Summed up in one word the answer is… Integrity. Integrity is what He cultivates in each of our lives as we give Him the throne over our lives.

Habakkuk 2:4 says that “the righteous shall live by his faith” but what does that mean? Does it mean that we are to live in a fantasy world where we are out of touch with reality? What about the reverse where we are so in-tune with reality that we become overwhelmed? A faith-based life isn’t either of those two extremes, nor is it a watered-down version of somewhere in-between.

When we think of performers we often thing of actors, athletes, or those who make a living in front of an audience. The reality is the size of the audience doesn’t determine who is or who is not a performer. The truth is you can be performing for just one person.

More than forty authors, over a thousand years penned a consistent theme of a loving God working to reveal and restore us to Himself.

Women have one thing that is undeniable and that is influence. Today, in honour of this reality, we are going to discuss the most controversial text when it comes to women in Scripture. One that has caused misunderstanding, but if embraced holds the key to you being the woman of God that He has created you to be.

In 2005 I read these words that started a new adventure in my life. “What if, after countless hours within the walls of a church you woke up one day full of knowledge but completely brain-dead about prayer?”

Today we are going to discuss how essential prayer is in an honest, no-nonsense fashion. Simply put, how do we talk and hear from God in our daily lives. Today promises to be honest, practical, and perhaps life-changing.

Most of the elements of our lives are built around some variation of the principle of reciprocity. We work.. we get paid. We buy and sell. Karma. Yet when it comes to being a follower of Christ, nothing can be further from the truth. Grace is different. So different, in fact, that it is the main reason why many can’t fully embrace what God offers us because life in Christ is found in grace… alone.

Have you found life in grace alone?

For a number of years, when leading people to Christ, I would say something to this effect. “It isn’t about joining a church, it is about giving your life to Jesus.” To be honest, in saying that, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Faith in Christ is both individual and rooted in community. The church isn’t a building but a body where each of us have an essential part to play.

Today we are going to tackle the question: “Have you found life as the church in this world?”

I once heard Dr. Bill Morrow say something that hasn’t left me. He said, “You can have as much of God as you want… and you already do.” If God had more for you, why on earth would you not be open to receiving it? Are you hungry for more of God? If so, today we want to discuss what it means to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Have you found life in the Spirit?

How on earth is being baptized in water different than going for a swim or a soak in the hot tub? Is it just another religious form or ritual? Absolutely not! Being baptized in water is about embracing the heart of the Gospel by doing what Jesus did, and asked us to do. It is a significant moment where we go public with our faith by demonstrating, before others, that we are trusting God to work in and through our lives.

I am trusting today that I will answer most of your questions that may be hindering from beening baptized in water and discovering life that is brand new.

Church life can be a challenge for some men. All the talking, singing, and sharing just isn’t a strong point for some guys. So today, in honour of you, we have created an experience just for you. Words are little things that can make a big difference in our lives. The right word at the right time has the ability to cause one to soar above their circumstances. On the flip side, the wrong word at the wrong time has the power to chain you to your circumstances. The power is exercised by a small member of our bodies – our tongues.

Sometimes our lives hit The Dip because of the decisions we make.

Today we want to look at two sides of a bad decision. First, the one that puts us in a vulnerable position. Second, how God speaks to us in the midst of our mess.

Even if a dumb decision lands your life in The Dip, I have good news. God is the same whether you are on the mountain top or passing through the valley. In fact, if truth be known, it is almost always in The Dip where growth happens when we allow God in.

Sometimes our lives hit The Dip because of the decisions of those close to us.

Living life in community with family and friends is as God designed our lives to function. We have gifts that other people need. We are better together than apart. While that is fully true, there is another side to this equation. Life in community, as God designed, is also ripe with challenges and sometimes pain. That is why today’s discussion is essential for all our lives.

All of our lives have hit The Dip because of the decisions of someone close to us. The question is have we gone through or taken up residence in The Dip as result of their decisions?

Sometimes our lives hit The Dip because life throws something we didn’t see coming.

Plans. We can make them for just about anything. Plans for savings, school, life and travel are all things we can (and should) make plans about. Yet there are other things that happen to us that we never planned for our lives such as job-loss, sickness, divorce or tragedies. These are things no one plans for, yet they happen all the time. Today we want to talk about the life you may not have planned, but find yourself living.

All of our lives experience moments that we don’t plan for and they catch us off guard. One thing I know for certain is, whether our life has unfolded exactly as planned or not, God is still trustworthy.

This statement is fascinating to me: “Sometimes our lives hit The Dip because God purposes it.”

There is a false notion that God’s plan for your life is the one filled with ease, comfort and only good things. The problem with this notion is…the Bible. Scripture is clear that God allows certain tests and trials to come into our lives for a divine purpose. Today we want to take a few minutes to explore how some trials allow us to see ourselves and God, in a fresh new way.

Sometimes in our lives The Dip isn’t to be rebuked, but understood in light of God’s purpose.

Start doing the right things and stop doing the wrong things — that’s what it means to follow Jesus, right? Or what if we have it all turned around? What if it isn’t about us, but Him!

You have a platform. A place from which your life and its message are being shared with the world. The central question isn’t just about what the message is, but about whether you are allowing God to build your platform. Do You Hear?

“What Child is this who, laid to rest on Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, while shepherds watch are keeping?”

Outstanding question and the answer forever changed the course of history. But let’s get back to the question that Mary, Joseph, shepherds and the wise men had to answer on that starry evening. What Child is this? It has been about 2,000 years, and still this remains the essential question of our lives and the lives of those around us. Was He just another baby born to a couple or is this Christ the King?

Do you LOVE to open something early this time of year? Let me encourage you today to “open your heart” and if you do, you will receive the greatest gift of your life this Christmas.

Do You Hear?

Can you imagine hearing the sound of heaven singing? What would it sound like? What would they sing? For a few shepherds, they heard both the sound and recorded it in Luke 2:14: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”

Though we may try to be “good” most of the time, the truth behind it is, as the Bible says, that our heart motives are often wicked.
